Autumn is rolling on in. It’s grey and rainy outside, I wake up to dim gloom rather than cheery sunlight, and last week I went out with my jacket for the first time in months. We’re getting towards the time of year when I need to make a huge effort to get outside and feel the benefits of midday daylight, even when it’s raining.
I’m trying to get excited about forthcoming events but somehow the buzz just isn’t there. Doesn’t help that I’m not going to HOYS (Horse of the Year Show) this year, and I’m still trying to work out if I can afford a day or so in London for Olympia. I am going to America in October and you’d think I’d be excited. BUT 1) I’ve never flown before 2) I’m flying on my own and 3) I’m meeting up with co-moderators from an internet group and although I’m sure they’re all lovely people, they’re all American and I’ll be the weirdo Yorkshire woman. Therefore I can’t help being wary.
Come on woman, think of something cheery.

Hey –
You will not be that weird Yorkshire woman, you’ll be the instantly recognizable woman with the fabulous accent. The accent every single american woman wants, because really, Jane Austen never sounded like us, she sounded like you. Among others. The person that everyone will be trying to sound like (but discreetly) as the conference wears on. The person that will be pointed out – see? that there is Strop, she’s famous – The Cherry knows who she is… Plus you get to get mixed up on which side of the car to go to (that one had me flummoxed every day – I tried to pretend I meant to be there and put something in the wrong side of the car).
It’ll be great. I wish I was going.

Well, I am glad you are cheerier. I still wish I could go. I doubt they will be lovely. A solid half of them are writers, making them relatively odd ducks in the general scheme of things. But literate. And probably amusing.
Knock ’em dead!

Oh, honey, it was a brave, brave thing you did. You were lovely and never the weird Yorkshire woman; I hope we were all OK. Americans, you know. We’re a mixed bag. xoxo, B.
